1889 Abstract Map of Parker County

During the National Trust for Historic Preservation Week May 3-9, 2004 the Society recognized the Parker County Commissioners Court for their efforts on a restoration and rehabilitation project on the Parker County Courthouse. The work was financed with a grant from the State of Texas specifically for restoring historic courthouse buildings.

In addition to recognizing the County Commissioners the Society also placed on loan a replica 1889 abstract map of Parker County. The General Land Office in Austin, Texas began an Adopt-a-Map program to help defray the costs of restoring and preserving many of their maps which date back to the earliest days of the State of Texas. The Society adopted the 1889 abstract map of Parker County and for their contribution received a very like copy of the original map. The Society framed and matted the map creating a very interesting and beautiful display piece depicting the laying out of abstracts and surveys as the county was in the early years of development.

Placing the map on loan at the Courthouse was a perfect fit, for the Courthouse was originally built in 1888 for $55,555.55. At the time of the presentation the Courthouse was about to re-open after being closed for almost two years while the restoration was completed. Pictured here are members of the Society as well as members of the County court and employees.
